After the rate of reading in our time has decreased significantly as a result of the spread of social media, which has become occupying our minds and the minds of our children in particular, and taking a large space of thinking and time, governments return to encouraging the return to reading books and benefiting from the benefits that reading gives to humans.

Hence, the ministries of education in the Arab countries sought to activate student activities in schools, to contribute, in turn, to the re-engagement of students to free reading, through free reading classes and library activities, and assigning them to prepare and write research through which the student will become accustomed to reading, research and knowledge.

The goal is to motivate male and female students to read through the “Reading Challenge” competition, which it circulated to all its schools, and it is part of an Arab project to stimulate reading. According to an integrated system to accustom students from a young age to reading in various fields, encourage them to read, and enhance their skills, comprehension and comprehension skills.

This system includes the dissemination of the culture of reading among students by several means, the most important of which are: preparing competitions to constitute an incentive and support for competition in the field of reading, accustoming students to it and making it a daily practice.

“Challenge Contest”

In this regard, the Ministry of Education in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia recently announced the participation of more than one million and four hundred thousand students from all levels of public education in the Arab Reading Challenge project in its sixth session, by registering students’ data on the project’s website.

The stage of judging the participation of male and female students who finished reading fifty books at the level of education departments began on 9/9/1443 AH. The names of those qualified at the level of education departments will be submitted to the judging committees at the national level in the Ministry of Education.

The conditions for participation in the Arab Reading Challenge 2022 are as follows:

The student participating in the Arab Reading Challenge must be from the first grade of primary school until the third grade of secondary school. Next, the participating student must pass through five stages, and each stage includes reading ten books and summarizing them in ten pages.

The participating student must bring a brochure called the Challenge Passport, and this brochure contains everything he summarized from the books.

Conditions of the read book in the Arab Reading Challenge 2022

Each book read in the Arab Reading Challenge must meet the following conditions:

The book that the participant reads must be written in Arabic or translated into Arabic.

The book must be read appropriate to the level of the student’s stage, in terms of its subject and number of pages.

The read book must also be one of the cultural books that help enrich the cultural balance of the reader, whether in the field of art, literature, science, history, politics or even general culture. It is also accepted that the book be a story or a novel.

The book should not be a reference, such as interpretations of the Qur’an, dictionaries and encyclopedias.

The book should not be a magazine or newspaper. Rather, the book should not be one of the books or stories that the student must study in the curriculum. It is possible to read electronic books, provided that they have a publisher and author.

“Motivation and Prizes”

The prizes for the Arab Reading Challenge are distributed as follows: The Distinguished Schools Award: The prize is worth one million dirhams, The Challenge Champions prize: The prize is five hundred thousand dirhams, The Distinguished Supervisors prize: The prize is three hundred thousand dirhams, and the Communities Champions prize: The value of the prize is one hundred thousand dirhams.

In order to register students in the Arab Reading Challenge 2022, the following steps must be followed: Students must be registered in the competition through their schools and their supervisors. After completing the registration process, each registered student will receive the first stage passport, which is in red. This passport contains ten reading visas, and each visa contains ten pages. The student must read the book and summarize it on one page to ensure that he obtains a reading visa.

The student must finish reading ten books and summarize them in ten pages, in order to be able to pass the first stage, move to the second stage and obtain the green passport, and the student must finish reading ten books and summarize them in ten pages, in order to be able to pass the second stage, and move to the third stage. The Arab Reading Challenge is an Arab initiative to encourage reading in the Arab world through the commitment of more than one million students to achieving the desired goal, which is to read fifty million books during each academic year. This huge project was launched at a cost of three million US dollars, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President of the United Arab Emirates, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai.​

The vision for this project is: “Instilling a love of reading in the hearts of young people is instilling the foundations of progress and excellence for our countries.”

The message of the project is to bring about a renaissance in reading through the arrival of the “Arab Reading Challenge” project to all students in schools and universities in the Arab world, including the children of Arab communities in foreign countries, and learners of the Arabic language from non-native speakers. Arabic reading, and the necessity of upgrading it to take an advanced position globally.

In addition to strengthening the national and Arab sense of belonging to one Arab homeland, spreading the values ​​of tolerance, moderation and acceptance of the other, and forming a generation of distinguished and creative people who are able to innovate in all fields.

As well as presenting an integrated model based on scientific foundations to encourage projects of a similar nature in the Arab world, and to activate the movement of authorship, translation, printing and publishing in a way that enriches the library of Arab youth.

“Free Reading”

There are other projects in the Kingdom, most notably the project to renew the connection with the book that was adopted by the King Abdulaziz Public Library, and the activities of the national cultural project to renew the connection with the book, to devote efforts to spreading reading awareness with the aim of developing tendencies and enhancing the love of reading among male and female students and encouraging teachers to inculcate the concept of free reading. This made the library also start holding many activities and events related to reading and instilling the concept of a love of reading among members of the community, in cooperation with the Ministry of Education; Being the first and strongest link in the process of construction, which is the central key to development, progress and building civilizations in all fields and the basic building block in the formation of the personality of young people and the development of intellectual and spiritual values.

Among the activities that the King Abdulaziz Public Library specialized in, a mobile library with field visits for the intermediate stage and a reading course for the secondary stage in the library branch in Khurais, and the allocation of the children’s library in the branch of the King Abdulaziz Public Library in the square to hold festival activities for primary students and equip it with all the necessary technical capabilities and modern devices and broadcast Interesting and appropriate materials through the screens that seek to strengthen the relationship between the child and the book and enhance his self-confidence to acquire different sciences.

And the “Read” project that Aramco has adopted, it still believes that reading is one of the most important means influencing the enrichment of the future generation, in order to achieve the vision and direction to reach a knowledge society, and strive to instill a love of knowledge, science, creative thinking skills and artistic and cultural taste, so that a balance is achieved between mental faculties. Emotional development for future generations. Therefore, the activities of the “Read” program, one of the initiative’s programs, came to form an innovative series that celebrates reading, and leads a path of passion for the love of the book and honoring the “Reader of the Year.” He reads it and summarizes his experience with this book in a creative way, whether it is in the form of a video, a picture or a creative presentation, and he submits it through the program’s website. The best entries are selected based on the participating category (intermediate – secondary – university), and the best 24 entries are selected to qualify for the final stage.

The finalists were involved in intensive training of 60 hours of training for each qualified person, in the areas of reading comprehension, analysis and criticism, and the skills and arts of presenting ideas, in order to qualify them for the final qualifiers, with many incentive and in-kind prizes for the qualified participants and winners.
